The Kitchen

As you could tell from the original photos, the original kitchen was not our style at all! The finishes, fixtures, and flooring all have to change as well as the layout.

To try and determine the layout of the kitchen we went to floorplans and 3d models.  We wanted to use as many of the existing cabinets as possible and just rearrange them to form a plan that worked best for us. The original floorplan looked roughly like this:
We knew immediately that we wanted to remove the wall that seperated the kitchen from the dining area, but we didn't know what we wanted to do with the island to make it more functional. Here is our latest (and more detailed) plan:
The main flow of traffic into the kitchen will be coming from the living/dining areas (the top of the plan).  We decided to take advantage of this and position the island so that it reaches that wall.  We built the wall out slightly so that we could reach it, and can use the side of the new surface as a tall slender storage compartment.  We are removing the upper cabinets that were above the stove and relocating them to this new wall. This will free up the area around the stove to do something fun at a later time.
We built out the island so that it can more easily be used for dining at. The organic curving shape of the counter is a perfect example of form following function.  The radius for the amount of space needed for the doorway entering the kitchen from the laudry hall forms the first curve and then we wrapped it around to create a 3' deep island for sitting at.

We already have started tackling the finishes. Check out this laminate work!

We started facing the upper cabinets, and loved the results so much we went on to choose a contrasting laminate for the lower ones!

We will have more on the hardware you see here later!
While we are leaps and bounds from where we started, we still have a lot left to do in here! Let us know what you think of our changes so far!

Happy Friday from Iconi!
